Questions About Internet Speed
How do I check my internet speed?
Press Start at the top of this page. In about 30 seconds the test measures your download and upload speed, ping, and jitter, right in your browser with nothing to install. For the truest reading of your plan, test on a computer plugged into your router, then test over Wi-Fi in the rooms you use.
What is a good internet speed for a home?
For most homes, 100 to 300 Mbps download covers streaming, video calls, and working from home for several people at once. A 4K stream uses about 15 to 25 Mbps, and an HD video call about 3 to 4 Mbps each way. Upload matters too: 20 Mbps or more keeps video calls and cloud backups smooth.
Why is my Wi-Fi slower than my internet plan?
Your plan’s speed arrives at the modem. Wi-Fi then loses speed through walls, floors, and distance, and an older router or extenders can cut it further. Test next to the router and in the slow room: a big drop means the fix is better Wi-Fi coverage, not a faster plan. Fixing dead zones is our specialty.
How do I find Wi-Fi dead zones in my house?
Choose your room under the gauge before each test, starting near the router, then test the rooms where Wi-Fi feels slow. Room by Room compares them, and a room 60% or more slower than your best one is likely a dead zone. We fix dead zones in homes and businesses from Longview, WA to Salem, OR.
What do ping and jitter mean?
Ping is how long data takes to reach the test server and come back, in milliseconds. Jitter is how much ping changes from moment to moment. Low ping and jitter keep video calls and online games smooth. Ping while downloading or uploading shows how much a busy connection slows everything else.
Does this test work with my internet provider?
Yes. It works with any provider, including Xfinity (Comcast), Ziply Fiber, CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber, T-Mobile and Verizon home internet, and Starlink. If a wired test comes in well below your plan, your provider is the best one to contact.
How accurate is this speed test?
It measures the way the major speed tests do: several connections at once, with the warm-up left out and brief spikes and dips trimmed. It runs on Cloudflare’s network, usually through Portland, so the result reflects the connection you use every day around Vancouver and Portland.
How much data does a speed test use?
A fast connection can use several hundred MB per test, because the test downloads and uploads as much as the line can carry for several seconds each way. On a phone plan with a data cap, run it over Wi-Fi.
